Type 'rechargeable AA' into Amazon and the spec race is immediate: 2400, 2600, 2800 mAh printed on cells that are physically the same size as an eneloop rated at 2000. A significant fraction of those high numbers cannot be reproduced on a calibrated charger analyzer, and the gap is visible in reviews the moment a technically literate buyer posts a measured-capacity screenshot. What 'rated capacity' formally means

Under IEC 61951-2, the international standard for sealed portable nickel-metal hydride cells, rated capacity is not a peak or a best-case figure. It is established by a defined procedure: after preparation, the cell is charged under the standard condition, rested briefly at 20 plus-or-minus 5 degrees Celsius, and then discharged at a reference current of 0.2 It down to a defined end voltage of 1.0 volt per cell; the delivered charge is the reference capacity, and a compliant cell must meet its declared minimum. Why overstatement is commercially irrational

The short-term temptation is obvious: in a filtered search sorted by a spec, 2800 beats 2000. The medium-term cost is hidden in the return and review system. Capacity complaints convert into one-star reviews that cite measured numbers, which are difficult for a seller to dispute because they mirror the buyer's own test; they drive returns that FBA charges back to the seller; and they suppress conversion among the enthusiasts who generate the most helpful reviews and answer other buyers' questions.

A conservative, test-backed label inverts that loop. When a buyer measures 1926 from a 2000-rated cell, the result confirms the brand rather than betraying it, and that confirmation is posted as a five-star 'does what it says' review - the most persuasive content in the category.

Designing a defensible label

The OEM controls the inputs that make a label defensible. Specify the rated current and endpoint voltage explicitly in the manufacturing test, sort cells and discard or down-grade the lower tail rather than averaging it into the label, hold a minimum-capacity commitment rather than advertising a maximum, and validate that the label survives the early-cycle region rather than only cycle zero.
